Travel Advisory for Mitchell County

Areas of freezing fog and rain are possible tonight in Mitchell County, according to a weather advisory warning from the Colorado City Police Department. 

Temperatures are expected to fall to 14 degree Fahrenheit.
 

Beef conference scheduled in Glen Rose

GLEN ROSE – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will host the 11th annual Central Texas Beef Cattle Clinic Jan. 19 at the Somervell County Expo Center, Glen Rose.

The center is located at the corner of U.S. Hwy. 67 and Bo Gibbs Blvd., next to the Best Western motel. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to be served at 6 p.m. The program will start at 6:30 p.m., said Joshua Blanek, AgriLife Extension agent for Somervell County.

Fish art competition open to students

ATHENS , Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) officials intend to make the 2010 State-Fish Art Contest expo at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens the biggest and best in the contest’s history, and they need your help.

Wildlife Forever, the national sponsor of the contest, has agreed to move the national competition and expo from the Mall of America in Brooklyn Center , Minnesota , to TFFC for the July 17 event.

2010 good year to stargaze

Archair astronomers will want to take note of several skywatching opportunities in 2010, including a total eclipse of the moon at the end of the year.

While North American skygazers will miss out on the January 15 solar eclipse, they can still pick out details on Mars  January 29, when the red planet makes its closest approach to Earth until 2014.

With the aid of a medium sized amateur telescope, viewers should be able to discern dark surface details and perhaps the occasional white cloud.

Geocaching connects Mitchell County globally

The next time you spot a stranger poking around in Mitchell County, he may be a member of the world wide geocaching community hot on the trail of an elusive treasure.

The treasure in question isn’t gold or silver, however, but a small waterproof container with tradeable items as part of a high tech game of hide and seek played with Global Positioning Systems.

Parnell funeral slated Friday

Mr. Virgil Parnell, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, January 05, 2010 at Mitchell County Hospital. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, January 7, 2010 from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. 

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Loraine with Rev.-Dale Hartley officiating and burial to follow in the Loraine Cemetery

Candidates jockey for ballot position

Although the filing deadline for candidates on the March 2 ballot has passed, candidates are still jockeying for position.

Republican Congressman Mike Conaway will have an opponent in the primary elections for District 11. San Angelo Tea Party representative Chris Younts will challenge Conaway for the Republican nomination.

Larry Kilgore of Amarillo has dropped out of the governor’s race, as has Kinky Friedman. A Democrat, Friedman will run for commissioner of agriculture against current commissioner Todd Staples.

Stock show promotes youth leadership skills

The Mitchell County Livestock Show Association will host its 73nd annual livestock show January 14-16 at the Mitchell County fairgrounds on west business I-20.

This year’s show will be dedicated to the memory of Scurry-Mitchell County farmer Todd Shaw, who was a big supporter of the livestock show.

Pen set up for the show will begin at 2 p.m. on January 10th.  Weigh in will begin by 5 p.m. on Thurs., January 14.  All animals must be in the barn by 6 p.m.
