Junktique leaves 'em speechless

Fabulous, exceptional, amazing, inspiring, outstanding, marvelous and perfect were just some of the words used to describe the weekend in Colorado City. Never before have we had so many choices for entertainment in our city, and it was wonderful.

A cowboy breakfast was the starting point for all the activities, and it was followed by the first annual Junktique Jog and Western Walk. Adults, children and pets ran, walked or were pushed to the finish line with an enthusiastic crowd cheering them on. Jincy and Jeremy Ross had the vision for our event, and they made that vision come true with the help of so many special volunteers.

After the race, the Junktique Jamboree officially opened and the performance stage came alive with dancers and singers from our schools. Kim Anderson was responsible for scheduling the entertainment, and Mark Merrell set up our sound system. These two are so much help with our event and can always be counted on to contribute.

Vendors were swamped with enthusiastic shoppers, and the entertainment continued in the afternoon with our bagpiper and the mariachis from San Angelo Central, under the direction of Ladene Hartin, a former teacher from Colorado City. They were wonderful, and the audience was packed.

The climbing wall and the Science Spectrum from Texas Tech were so popular and gave the children free venues. Vicky’s Kids from Odessa brought the pony and train rides to raise money for disabled children that are injured by child abuse.

Marcus provided a free movie, and he supplied us with some bounce houses to keep the little ones busy.

The Trash to Treasure Junk Finders Auction showcased some very special creative items. Creativity abounds in our small city, and it was evident in this event.

Saturday evening, the long awaited evening at the Heritage House, sponsored by the museum, brought out a group of wonderful people supportive of our widely recognized Heart of West Texas Museum. Jay Boy Adams and Bill Worrell were the very special entertainers headlining the event, and the crowd was wowed by their performance. Our hometown boys gave the audience a night to remember. The décor and grounds surrounding the Heritage House were beautiful and enhanced the entire setting.

The street dance sponsored by some special merchants began at 7 p.m., and downtown came alive with amazing activity. 5 Miles West performed to a crowd of over 300, and people of all ages danced, watched and sometimes sang along with the outstanding music of this New Mexico band. Lights in the trees, constant cruising traffic on 2nd Street and the open doors of Flavaz were reminiscent of yesterday in our city.

The feeling of closeness and community was alive and well Saturday night on Walnut. It is my understanding that the band was put in touch with Clay Walker by cell phone and talked with him the night of the performance. Colorado City could be the place where this band was truly discovered with their big break.

Our second annual fashion show was our finale on the performance stage. Bella Jane’s, Dragonfly, Eclectiques and Wood’s Boots provided the exciting models and up-to-date fashions for this show stopper. Children, teenagers, young adults, moms and special Linda Baum, who's in a category all her own, modeled for our stores. These models showcased the fashions and thrilled the crowd with a few unexpected touches for an afternoon of delightful entertainment.

Thank you, Colorado City, for supporting these events and for making this a great place to live.
