Valentine's Day Getaway
February 14, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Want to go somewhere special with your Valentine? What could be more romantic than a leisurely stroll along the beautifully landscaped San Antonio River’s edge lined with fine restaurants, sidewalk cafés, and all sorts of fun shops and boutiques? Dogs are allowed, but keep them on a leash and clean up after them…please.
San Antonio’s famous Riverwalk winds through downtown where historic and contemporary architecture blend to create a truly romantic setting that will transport you to a more romantic era. End your special day by taking a relaxing river boat cruise through the Riverwalk corridor.
But San Antonio is not just a place for romancing your sweetheart; it’s a great place for the whole family. San Antonio is steeped in Texas history—Remember the Alamo! Across the street from the Riverwalk, you can enter one of Texas’ most revered shrines, the Alamo. Try to look beyond the trinkets and souvenirs and see the very walls behind which Jim Bowie, Davy Crocket, William Barret Travis, Sam Houston, and almost two hundred other heroes who—against overwhelming odds—courageously fought for freedom.
My ten-year-old godson was in complete awe to stand where these brave men stood—a place that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Texans…and my godson.
But San Antonio is not all history. The Tower of the Americas, on the site of the 1968 World’s Fair (HemisFair) is open to tourists. Ride the glass elevator 750 feet into the Texas sky where you get a bird’s-eye view of the city. Your ticket ($10.95 and $8.95 for children) is good all day, so you can take both a day and a night trip up to the observation deck, or have dinner in the Chart House Restaurant. Be sure to see the 4-D movie on the ground floor, Yee-haa!
Six Flags’ Fiesta Texas and Sea World offer all-day fun for the family; and you might be able to catch a Spurs’ basketball game at the AT&T Center. I did not find the zoo to be very inviting, but I did enjoy the Natural Bridge Cavern. The walking tour through the cavern can be somewhat steep and has some steps, so take that into consideration if you plan to go. But the formations are well worth the trek.
So, whether it is just you and your sweetheart or the entire family, San Antonio is one of our Texas Treasures.
